OASIS OF LOVE FOUNDER AND CEO
I'm Esther kenesoi kuraru Hsc an advocate, a mentor and a female genital mutilation survivor. I was raised In a typical polygamous maasai family set up In Kantana village, Mayianat Location, Laikipia North.
Female genital mutilation is a deep rooted culture among our Laikipia maasai community. I was subjected to this retrogressive culture at a tender age of fifteen years old. The plans to the actual event were deliberate and elaborate, on the fateful morning an old woman completely removed my genitalia. The pain was unspeakable for the humiliation; i lost so much blood from the cutting.
The humiliation of having members of the community witness the entire female genital mutilation is unspeakable.
This exercise robbed me of my dignity and innocence. It was embarrassing to have members of the community witness this horrific act. I have gone through unspeakable emotional, psychological and physical challenges directly related to Fgm. It is for these and many other reasons I chose to break the silence and secrecy around female genital mutilation. I use my voice to speak against this vice and to raise awareness on stigma and child trauma In relation to Fgm.
It is unfortunate that this vice is still high and is estimated that 200 million women and girls have gone through fgm. 3 million are at a risk of undergoing Fgm every year.
Oasis of love therefore seeks to end Fgm though empowering young people to get quality education, Capacity building, Culture sensitive modalities, Community dialogue and other accepted Interventions. My dream is to see our community free of Fgm and our women and girls grow to reach their full potential.
Oasis of love is fundraising to build a vibrant multi purpose Child Protection, Empowerment and Transition center, This center will support Oasis of love fulfill it's mandate.
